Josh Nelson: Cynthia thanks so much for taking the time to do this interview. I noticed you run a lot of event postcards, why is that?

Cynthia Dark: We want people to know that our residents lead an active lifestyle. Event postcards bring new people in to a community and keep prospects interested in what we have to offer. Due to the nature of our business, our prospects are generally people in an older age bracket.

Josh: How do postcards fit into your overall marketing plan?

Cynthia: Basically, it’s our main form of direct advertising. It’s critical that we are able to bring prospects in to see our communities so we can show them what resort-style retirement living is all about. We have sophisticated lists to help us target the right audience for these postcards. Sometimes we even purchase mailing lists to catch anyone we might have missed.

Cynthia: It depends. Each community has different responses and so based on the responses we get we may advertise more consistently or less. But generally, yes, we try and stay consistent.

Josh: Good. Consistency is one the biggest keys to successful postcard marketing. What kind of response rate do you get?

Cynthia: It varies for each community. I can tell you we did a recent postcard that advertised an event we held that was a workshop on dealing with Alzheimer’s that was extremely successful as far as response rate goes. It was a higher-end event so we actually charged for it, something we don’t normally do, but I think having that price tag on the event really signaled to people that it was something of value.

It seems that for a lot of businesses today simply use postcards on faith. Often the line you hear is, “I know that half of my marketing is working, I just don’t know which half”. The problem with that thought is that good businesses don’t run on faith (at least not ones that want longevity). Tracking your postcard results should be an important step in any campaign because you can:
  • Focus more energy on what is working – Tracking results will allow you to identify what is successful in your marketing campaigns. Knowing this is critical as it will allow you to funnel more resources into marketing efforts that will increase your monetary returns.

  • Make adjustments to sub-par performing campaigns – Not every campaign is going to be a soaring success; however, that doesn’t mean you have to live with the results. Being able to analyze the results and see where you could improve will allow you to give your marketing campaign a shot in the arm.

  • Eliminate non-performing – If you’ve made adjustments to a campaign and it’s still not working then stop doing it. Use that money and increase marketing that you know is working so you can get a better return. After all, isn’t getting a better return what it’s all about?

The whole exercise of tracking your results is to ultimately increase your sales.

What does all of this ultimately mean? It means that tracking postcard results will give you useful information to then get you better results. Now say it with me, “How can we track our postcard results?” Here is your answer:

  • Use a separate promotional or coupon codes – Set aside a special promo code that is distinguishable from other promos. By doing this you will be able to see just how many people are actually responding to the cards. Keeping the promo codes separate will prevent you from dirtying your data with normal promos.

“A real estate agent wants to test how a new slogan he developed affects his response rate. He would randomly divide up his customer base into two groups. The first group, which is the control group, received postcards that had his old slogan. The second group, called the test group, received postcards with his new slogan. Let’s say he received 5 responses from the first group (the old slogan) and 10 responses beck from the second group (the new slogan). He could then theoretically assume that his new slogan was more effective than the old one.”
 
These are just a few of the most popular tried-and-true ways for tracking postcard, or any marketing results. Remember, it’s okay to alter the way you track results to better fit your business model. The important thing is just to track! Once you start seeing results you will wonder why you didn’t start sooner.

The truth is, a business that doesn't have a mobile email strategy will likely fall behind competitors.

A couple of the tenets for desktop email marketing can go for mobile marketing just the same, but with a slight tweak. Subject lines are always more likely to get attention when they are written with the least possible number of characters, but this is made even more true for mobile. Smartphone screens are only so wide, so it's necessary to pare down subject lines while still keeping them enticing and informative.

High-resolution images can give an email some razzle-dazzle and get the customer's attention, but they don't work as well on smartphones, no matter how fast the phone's connection. Large images eat up data and take over the email, so if you need to include an image, make it small and make sure it is absolutely relevant.

One problem marketers don't have with desktop email is getting the lead to read the entire email because it's all on one big screen. Mobile, however, necessitates scrolling to view the entire content of the email. Put the important stuff up front as always, but keep enough out to give the user motivation to keep scrolling.
